10 Ways to Use Flex Space in Your New Custom Home

copper builders flex space home

Ahh… the flex space — that small but oh, so prime real estate within your very own home. It’s topping all the new home must-have lists; everyone wants it, but only a lucky few can have it. Imagine… what would YOU do with an additional 20 square feet (or more!) of multi-purpose space inside your home? Especially if that space had doors that shut for privacy, was heated and cooled, and was just as stylish as the rest of your home?

Luckily, when you build a new custom home, you can personalize the floor plan to fit whatever unique needs you may have. The options for your flex space are limited only by your imagination. For inspiration, here are a few of our favorites!

How to Best Use Flex Space in Your Home

Home Office

For many of us, working from home is a new reality that’s going to be around for a while. While the dining room table was once an adequate space to “get some work done,” we now need full-blown offices or Zoom rooms where we can conduct business full-time if needed.

Study Room/Classroom

For kids that may still have virtual classes or are homeschooled, a dedicated learning space is a must. This area can be furnished with kid-sized desks and shelves, plenty of books and arts supplies, and educational posters to reinforce their letters and numbers. If you have multiple children that share a bedroom, a flex room allows them both to have the quiet study time they need in separate rooms.

Kids Playroom

If you have a two-story home, a playroom on the first floor is an ideal way to keep younger kids close while keeping your living area free of toys. From colorful decals to chalk walls, there are so many creative ways to make this space a wonderland of imaginative play.

Additional Bedroom

You may not host a houseful of overnight guests often, but when you do, an extra bedroom comes in handy! Whatever the normal function of your flex space is, it’s always nice to roll out a portable bed, blow up an air mattress, and give your guests somewhere private to get their rest.

Hobby Room

Are you a tinkerer, builder, crafter, painter? Whatever you do to relax and renew, you deserve a space where you can spread out and focus in. Build out your hobby room with a large center work table, sleek shelving, baskets for supplies, and great task lighting. When you’re finished for the day, there’s no need to pick up or move your creation. Just turn off the lights, shut the door, and you’re ready to pick up right where you left off the next day.

Home Gym

Whether you like to start off your day with an energizing workout or you prefer to wind down with yoga or stretches in the evening, a home gym with your own equipment lets you do it on your time and at your pace. No more gym membership fees, lines, or crowds. And no more excuses!

Game Room

Stop taking up space in the garage with the pool table and set it up in your very own flex space-turned-game room. There’s plenty of space to perfect your shot! If you prefer games of the electronic sort, set up a large screen and comfortable seating without taking up valuable space in your living room.

Movie Room

If you love the movie theater experience with a huge screen, dim lights, and extra comfortable seating, recreate it in your own home with a movie room. If you’re building a custom home, you can add dimmers to your switches, surround-sound in the room, and even a small wet bar to make it ultra exclusive. This is also a great idea if you have a large family and can never decide what to watch on TV together.

Library

If you have a collection of great books and you like to pull them off the shelf every now then to revisit them, there’s no better space than a cocoon-like, cozy reading room. Add floor-to-ceiling shelves with a rolling ladder to reach the highest ones, a soft leather wingback, a couple of accent tables for drinks, and a sculptural floor lamp. You may never want to leave.

Pets’ Room

Multi-dog owners won’t think twice about this one. Dogs love a quiet, calm space that’s just for them. Why not give them a whole room? Set it up with their favorite beds, toys, and blankets — and make sure to put their crates in there, too. When guests come over or when you just need to keep them from being underfoot for a few minutes, they’ll entertain themselves in a confined space built just for them!
