What’s It Like Living in LoSo, Charlotte

South End, Charlotte has been a hot spot for new development, restaurants, nightlife, and shopping for a few years now, but lately, more people are taking notice of the neighborhood even further south down Tryon Street — Lower South End, or as the locals call it, LoSo.

LoSo was originally developed as a warehouse and distribution district, but several breweries and distilleries took advantage of the vast open spaces and appealing location to set up taprooms as South End was being redeveloped. From there, interest and development have exploded, and LoSo has become Charlotte’s newest “it” neighborhood, and it’s just getting started.

This walkable, urban neighborhood is filled with restaurants, bars, breweries, fitness facilities, brand new housing, eclectic shops, public art, and tech start-ups. When you live in LoSo, some of Charlotte’s hottest places to eat, play, and shop are all within walking distance. Let’s explore:

Places To Eat & Drink

Whether you want morning coffee, an afternoon snack, or dinner and drinks, there are plenty of options in the neighborhood. Mugshots Coffee + Tea is a favorite for lattes and bagels, while Protagonist offers up pizza and craft beer in a sprawling dining space.

A huge patio, fresh beer, and Soft German Pretzels (along with other Bavarian bites) are the name of the game at Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, another lunchtime favorite. More local breweries and distilleries include Red Clay Ciderworks, Brewers at 4001 Yancy, Sugar Creek Brewing, and Doc Porter’s Distillery

Things To Do

When you want to stay close to home on the weekends, or if you have guests, there’s plenty to do right in the neighborhood. Take a cooking class or grab Saturday brunch from Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen, immerse yourself in a live adventure game at Escape Tactic, or get in tip-top shape at Inner Peaks Climbing.

Round out a great day with an evening at Queen Park Social  — a sprawling complex where you can play arcade games, bowl, drink craft brews, listen to live music, or hit the nightclub scene.

Stuff to Buy

Though it’s more of a social destination, there are a couple of cool, boutique shops in LoSo and even more coming in the future. Sleepy Poet has more than 60,000 square feet of antiques, vintage, and unique decor and has been voted “Best Antiques in Charlotte NC” by Charlotte magazine every year since 2011. GW Boutique is one of the best thrift stores in Charlotte where you can find designer shoes, shoes, and accessories at a huge discount.

LoSo is easily accessible with the Blue Line light rail, so getting to, from, and around the neighborhood is a breeze, with or without a car. If an up-and-coming neighborhood with eclectic people, places, and food is your thing, then you’ll love living in Lower South End, Charlotte.
